The Importance of Family Dinners

The dinner is more  than a meal.  Family dinners can even fight obesity.  But, that’s just one of the benefits of having a family dinner together says Dr. Mark Hyman.  He goes so far to say that “Eating at Home Can Save Your Life” and that “THE SLOW INSIDIOUS DISPLACEMENT of home cooked and communally shared family meals by the industrial food system has fattened our nation and weakened our family ties.”

Reconnect through the Family Dinner

Family dinner isn’t just an occasion to fuel  the body, it’ a time to connect and share its decline of it has astounding negative  social implications for our children and families.  If you want to bring your family closer and make them happier and healthier, the family dinner is the place to start.  Just as you schedule time for your work, favorite television shows and exercise,  in the same way, you must set aside time for the family dinner.  “Don’t schedule dinners into your life.  Schedule your life around your family dinners. ” It’s that important!   And, if done right with nutritious whole food, it can be a time of focused healing spiritually,  mentally and physically.  Fewer and fewer young adults even know how to cook anymore.  Food is our medicine and we can’t live without it.  And since we’re going to eat anyway, why not make a healing, educational, and connecting ritual of it?  It’s cheaper than therapy and a lot more enjoyable.

The Loss of Shared Family Meals Have Weakened Family Ties

via How Eating at Home Can Save Your Life by Dr. Mark Hyman

Research shows that children who have regular meals with their parents do better in every way, from better grades, to healthier relationships, to staying out of trouble. They are 42 percent less likely to drink, 50 percent less likely to smoke and 66 percent less like to smoke marijuana. Regular family dinners protect girls from bulimia, anorexia, and diet pills. Family dinners also reduce the incidence of childhood obesity. In a study on household routines and obesity in US pre-school aged children, it was shown that kids as young as four have a lower risk of obesity if they eat regular family dinners, have enough sleep, and don’t watch TV on weekdays.

We complain of not having enough time to cook, but Americans spend more time watching cooking on the Food Network, than actually preparing their own meals.”

Wake UP Please!

I just finished watching this video by Gary Null that was really shocking and downright scary about the drugging of our children just for “being children.” Just like the animals we eat don’t get to run and play outdoors, neither do our children, at least not like we did.  Consequently they have all this built up energy and sugar in them from processed food that they have to be drugged to sit still.   When my children were young, I was called a “health nut,” because I didn’t allow them to have many sweets and watched their diets so carefully.  Consequently, they were all pretty calm kids and grew up to be healthy and fit adults.  But, I remember an occasion when one my daughters was able to eat a fair amount of candy.  It was as if the exorcist needed to be called in.  The sugar soon faded off and she was back to normal again, but what a lesson I learned!

What’s Up With Grapes Being the Size of Kumquats?

We have created a generation that has grown up not knowing much about whole food.  Everything has been re-engineered.  Consider that the fruit don’t even have seeds in them anymore.  Watermelons and oranges are seedless and grapes are the size of kumquats.  Many children don’t even know what their food looks like in its natural state.  We have allowed ourselves to be convinced that processed, packaged, adulterated food is healthy, that pills are more powerful than a healthy immune system, and that drugging our children and seniors is normal.  We have been convinced that growing old is unnatural and we are willing to spend billions to mask our true realities.

Don’t Dis-Believe In Your Own Healing Power

WAKE UP!  The body and mind when working together is a miraculous combination.  Don’t dis-believe in your own healing power.  Also, don’t follow the crowd.  Your body is a marvelous creation when it has the proper fuel.  Food is fuel, but do you know where your food comes from and what’s in it?  The Cornucopia Institute keeps scorecards to make us healthier.  Did you know that America also has the highest obesity rates in the world?  We are killing ourselves and even worse killing our kids who are getting adult diseases in record numbers in childhood.  Consider these 15 facts about obesity. Your body is your temple.  Don’t become a slave to drugs, adulterated foods, and propaganda.  The truth is before your eyes.  As you set your new goals for the year, don’t forget to set  some for getting and staying healthy.

Independently Investigate Truth

It can be dangerous to just blindly follow the majority.

Nothing is off-limits today, from health, identity, race, ideologies, war, to religion.  We have been told who and what to believe and trust and who and what to fear and hate.  We follow the leaders or turn a blind eye even though our hearts tell us something contrary.  The enlightened are learning that they must do their own research: search their hearts and make their own conscious decisions.  Consider how time disproves many facts that people once accepted without question.  In 1964 more than half of all adult men smoked; it was the norm. People were taught that smoking was okay and almost nothing about second-hand smoke.  Now we know that both the smokers and those exposed to second-hand smoking are at risk.  Once we thought that smoking was safe, now we know it is the leading causes of preventable deaths.

What Are You Accepting Without Question?

Are you accepting the cultural, religious, and political fears, hatreds, or biases fed to you?  Are you accepting the limitations defined statistically for people who look like you, talk like you, dress like you, or who are your gender, ethnicity, or color?   Ideologies are one thing, but it is just as important to be informed about your health.  We don’t like who we see in the mirror and are afraid of aging, spending billions to avoid a natural process. Instead of changing our diets, lifestyles, and stopping catering to our addictions, we are accepting pills and medications as a way of life.  Some take a pill to get up, a pill to relax, a pill to arouse you and one to get to sleep.  Enough already!  What are you accepting today as fact, without question, that tomorrow may be proven catastrophic to your health.   We’ve been told to brush with fluoride toothpaste and fluoride has been added to all public water systems.  Now that too is under question.  One research study found that kids drinking water without fluoride had IQ’s that were eight points higher. Fluoride means lower IQ and more mental retardation. You are responsible for you and if you are a caretaker, for your children.  Before you believe something, check it out.   Before you put anything in your mouth, check it out.  Before you put something in your mind, check it out!  As the United Negro College slogan asserts, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste.” Here’s to more conscious thinking in 2011.  Your life and even our planet’s survival depends on it.

Healing with Clay

I just finished listening to a Teleseminar on the healing powers of Clay with Perry A, author of ‘Living Clay: Natures Own Miracle Cure’. My friend Brenda introduced me to the healing powers of clay about a year ago. She had numerous stories to tell of miraculous healing with her family members.  She swears by it.  I tried it myself a few months ago but with no consistency. However, my daughter had an episode where her ankle was so painful that she could not walk.  She soaked in the clay and the next morning the pain was gone.  As a skeptic, she says it could have been the Valium that she had taken to get some sleep.  But, pain killers usually only mask pain and when the medication wears off the pain returns.  The medication wore off and the pain was gone too.  Hmmm, you decide.

Free Teleseminars Bimonthly

Anyway, the Teleseminar was fantastic.  I was sold, not because she was selling but because she was humbly educating.   She didn’t even mention her books or products.

Helps with Shingles and Back Pain, Skin Infections, Parasites, Toxins, and Inflammation

Clay can be used as a poultice or taken internally to help heal acne, parasites, pain, inflammation, and more.  She mentioned how it would clear the pain from shingles as well as remove toenail fungus.  It also helps to detox the body of toxins, the liver, kidneys, mercury from fillings, and more.  It  can even help with lower back pain as it helps remove inflammation.  I decided to add this simple natural remedy to my health regimen.  She has recorded her webinars for people to learn and enjoy any time.  You’ll want to check them out.  There are articles, instructions on how to use, audio recordings, and general information.  She holds live webinars every other Thursday and you can ask questions then or email in advance.

Wishing you better health in 2011

May Health Chronicles- The Importance of Hope

What do naysayers, toxic people, and insensitive people have in common with weeds?

Answer: They choke the life out of living things.

“Just make her comfortable,” the cold, emotionless doctor said to us in front of my 83 year old step-mom after giving her only about 5 minutes of his time. “She won’t get any better you know. She’ll never be like she used to be.  She’s got kidney problems and her heart is operating only at 10%.  I don’t know what you expect me to do.

He didn’t even look or speak directly to her, instead focused his remarks to my sister and I.  I looked over at my step mom and watched as her spirit dropped.  She looked so sad… and hopeless!

You see, she still believed whatever the doctors told her.  For the next few days she barely ate.  This culminated into a trip to the emergency room two days before her 84th birthday. We tried to cheer her up while waiting for the test results by talking about her birthday to come.  “If I make it,” she replied doubtfully.  “Of course you’ll make it,” I said encouragingly.

The emergency room doctor was different.  He told her she would be fine and that she could go home.  “Everything looks good,” he said cheerfully.  “Nothing has changed from your earlier records.  You haven’t gotten any better, but you haven’t gotten any worse.” He patted her on her shoulders attentively while looking directly at her and said, “Take care of yourself now.” She smiled happily and said, “I will!”

Now her heart was still functioning at 10%.  She still had a bad cold and she is still on dialysis.  But, she perked up.  It was all in the presentation.  This doctor seemed to care.  She now had hope.  We celebrated her 84th birthday on May 24, 2010.  She made it!

The following timeless quote of John Maxwell reinforces the importance of caring, “People do not care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

We’re talking about a human life here.  And hope is just as important for dreamers with vision.  Haven’t we been told that without a vision, the people perish?   Vision and hope keep people going.  They keep people alive.  They keep the seeds of your dreams alive.  Seeds are your ideas, dreams, or wishes that spark a desire in you to act and give you hope, purpose, and joy.  Weeds are the people in your life that purposefully or unknowingly douse the fire of your dreams.  Protect your dreams, for they only have you to depend on.

In conclusion, I’d like to end with some words from one of Yolanda Adam’s songs, Don’t Give Up. “Keep the dream alive don’t let it die.  If something deep inside keeps inspiring you to try, don’t stop.  And never give up.  Don’t ever give up on you.  No, don’t give up!”
