My Fave Five Quotes of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

This month, to celebrate the life and contributions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr, I will share five of my favorite Dr. King quotes.   The basic theme of much of the speaking work I do centers on Vision, Values, and Virtues.  Very few people are more visionary, have higher values, or are more virtuous than Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

To prepare for this, I reflected on what virtues and values came to mind when I thought about Dr. King.  Unity, faith, non-violence, brilliant orator, service, love, sacrifice, legendary, committed, civil rights leader, courageous, spiritual, justice…   And the list goes on and on.   Finding just five favorite quotes was harder than I thought.  But here are my ‘Fave Five’ Faith and Hope, Justice, Perspective and Sacrifice, Service, and Unity.  To read about Dr. King on Faith and Hope click here.  http://wp.me/ppImQ-dD

How Are You Handing Change?

Continued from Part 1: 5 Changes That Can Dramatically Change Your Lifehttp://wp.me/ppImQ-d2

We Must Face Change with Courage, Resolve, and Hope

Now the question for you is how are you handling change?  Are you being swept up into the winds of change and enjoying the journey or are you fighting it and falling back into your old familiar routines.   The past as we know it is gone.  We’ve got to embrace new technologies, learn new strategies, and be open to new possibilities.  We must face all this change with courage, resolve, and hope.  If we do, we will be the leaders.  If we don’t, the dizzying  rate of change will consume and paralyze us.  Fortunately, you are not alone.  Help is all around you.  Reach out to others going in the same direction that you are and turn this seemingly uncontrollable chasm of chaos into a journey of joy!  I’ve written a book that focuses on change called On Track, On Fire, and On Purpose.  It discusses three critical tools for harnessing the power of change, your vision, your values, and your virtues.  You can purchase it on Amazon.com or from my website www.thepoetspeaks.com.

5 Changes That Will Make a Dramatic Difference

This article discusses five changes that can make a dramatic impact on your life:  And, the good thing about them is that you don’t need to wait for someone else to start realizing the benefits.  Your future is in your own hands.

The first change we must make has to do with our health.  We must make it a priority, do our own research, and take care of our bodies.

The second change has to do with taking care of others.   Is there someone in your life that requires your support and nurturing now?

The third change is to begin preparing for your next job right now.  With the lightening  speed of change, who knows when opportunity will knock.   You’ve got to be ready and poised to make a move.  So make sure that you take advantage of educational offerings and stay at the top of your game.  While others may be pensive and fearful, you must remain positive, focused, and productive.

The fourth change has to do with interpersonal skills.  People who get along with others tend to have longevity in organizations.  Be sure to appreciate and work well with diverse people.  Be a leader and set small goals to learn more about the diversity in your organization.  Don’t wait until a specific national emphasis month; instead incorporate learning about others into your daily routine.

The fifth change is to prepare for the future.  Start putting into place backup plans for your retirement and future well-being.  Are you learning to live within your means and spending less and saving more?   With all the fear in the air, it’s easy to get paralyzed, confused, and apathetic.  But, for leaders and winners, change implies, taking charge.  And, those that take charge are noticed and rewarded! We have a choice; we can be swept up by change or we can learn to face it, embrace it, and manage it.  We must be firm, yet flexible at the same time.  Spencer Johnson’s #1 bestseller, Who Moved My Cheese tackles this subject with humor and insight.  If you haven’t read it already, you’ll want to read it. It inspires great thought and offers a wonderful perspective on how to deal with change.  In it he uses four characters, Sniff and Scurry and Hem and Haw to represent the search for cheese in the maze of life.

The Healing Powers of Infrared Light

As many of you know that have been following my blog, my daughter has been looking into traditional and non-traditional therapies to find a cure for her neuropathy.  The latest research has led us to infrared light.  And, what an amazing discovery that has been.

Infrared for Detoxing, Treating Cellulite, Beautiful Skin, and Pain Relief!

Did you know that infrared light has been used in weight loss, improving the immune system, curing skin diseases, strengthening the cardio-vascular system, controlling blood pressure and cholesterol, treating burns, scars, gout, and tissue damage, and for relieving joint and muscle pain as well as arthritis.  And, if that were enough, when received through an infrared sauna, it can relieve stress, increase energy, remove toxins from the body, and treat cellulite!  Please note that all saunas are not created equal.  One liter of sweat from an ordinary sauna released only about 3% of toxins  compared to 20% of toxins released when using an infrared sauna.

How Does Infrared Get Rid of Heavy Metals?

According to http://www.infrared-sauna-reference.com/body-detoxification.html, “Human body fat starts to liquefy at 110 degrees Fahrenheit. When fat leaves your body through transpiration, it takes heavy metals along on the way out. The deep penetration of infrared energy in your skin makes this happen. This does not occur in a traditional sauna, only in an infrared sauna.

Increased blood circulation stimulates the sweat glands, releasing built-up toxins and waste. Daily sweating can help detoxify your body as it rids itself of an accumulation of potentially carcinogenic heavy metals (lead, mercury, zinc, nickel, cadmium) as well as alcohol, nicotine, sodium, sulfuric acid and cholesterol.”

What Exactly Is Infrared Light?

If you are like me, you might not understand what infrared light actually is.  How is it possible for it to do so much?  Well, everyone has seen the colors in a prism of sunlight if they’ve ever seen a rainbow. The colors go from violet, blue, green, yellow, orange, and finally red light.  Sir Frederick William Herschel, an 18th century astronomer and musician became curious about how much heat passed through the different filters he was using to observe sunlight.  So, he devised an experiment to see how much heat was associated with each separate color in the sunlight.  He noticed that each color got progressively hotter, with red being the hottest.  But then he discovered something else, that there was an region invisible to the eye beyond the red color that was the hottest of all.  This became known as infrared light and it also had a longer wavelength than the visible light.  Infrared light is so safe that today it is even used in hospital incubators.  It is also used for night vision, thermography, photography and tracking.  To learn more about this fascinating therapy, check out the links below.

Conscious Acts of Kindness Bring Joy to All

Remember all the buzz years ago about ‘Random Acts of Kindness?’  It was about doing deeds for strangers.  This is noble and worthy, and while it may end with charity to strangers, we all know that , “charity begins at home.”

In this spirit, a couple of years ago, my daughter Radiance who is now twelve and I decided to do something consciously to make the people we know happy.   Each day we picked a person and together consulted on what we could do to make that person happy.  I wish you could have seen us.  We looked like sneaky schemers, grinning from ear to ear, excited about the joy we were creating.  We were happy and the person we were doing something for was happy.  She loved it!  You might want to try this yourself or with your kids if you have any.  Pick someone right now that you care about and think about what you can do to make them happy.  It’s contagious!

Volunteering and Charity Are Paths to Joy and Happiness

And finally, volunteering and giving to charity are great paths to joy and happiness.  I’d like to tell you about a couple of friends of mine.  Maxine tutors a seven year old boy teaching him how to read.  When she speaks about how his face lights up to see her, her own voice lights up.  It’s clear that they bring each other joy!

Another friend of mine, Judith has a non-profit that among other things fills backpacks with food so that disadvantaged children can eat over the weekend.  Making a difference in the lives of others brings immeasurable joy to her and to the children and families she helps.  If you are interested in volunteering, donating, or doing a fundraiser to raise funds to feed a certain number of children or to sponsor a particular school, contact Judith at http://www.womenwhocareministries.org/contact.
